Washington Heights

Back to NYC Map

Washington Heights derives its name from the cliffs and hills for which it is known as well as Fort Washington, the fortification used by the Continental troops during the Revolutionary War. The area’s parameters are roughly 155th Street in the South, Dyckman Street in the north and the Hudson and Harlem Rivers on either side. This area has many green spaces which makes it a boon for the outdoor enthusiast; Riverside Park, Bennett Park, Gorman Park, Highbridge Park, Fort Washington Park and Fort Tryon Park.

The last of these is home to The Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum’s collection of medieval art, housed in stunning splendor – the reconstructed portion of five medieval French abbeys, shipped from Europe and reassembled brick-by-brick in the 1930s. Here visitors can examine the intricacies of the famous Unicorn Tapestries as well as selections from the museum’s collection of approximately 5000 medieval pieces. For more local history, the Morris-Jumel Mansion is one of the oldest homes in the country. Now a museum, the mansion is most well-known for the fact that George Washington made the residence his headquarters in the fall of 1776.

The residential area, Hudson Heights, is a sub-neighborhood of Washington Heights. This spot is very popular as nearly every structure is pre-war and many are in the Art Deco style that was fashionable at the time. Many of the buildings in this section are co-ops.

Transit-wise, New Jersey connects to the neighborhood via the George Washington Bridge, and downtown Manhattan is easily reachable via the C and the A subways, with Port Authority only 5 stops away by way of express.
